Equipment, Costumes, Props and Actors

Equipment:

  • iPhone 6s for filming - this helps me to conform to the indie convention of using the camera hand held therefore it gives of a budget/not caring vibe
  • Drone for filming establishing shots
Costumes:
Lead singer - the lead singers outfit is the most important outfit as it allows the audience to create an identity. So the lead singer will be wearing conventional indie clothes such as skinny jeans, t-shirt, and other clothes of scruffy nature, maybe even a worn bracelet, but most importantly a denim jacket as I feel this is very iconic of the indie genre

As for the rest of the band and actors it does not really matter too much what they are wearing as long as it remains the same through out the music video and is indie of course, they will be able to understand what indie clothing looks like by studying my mood board. As long as it looks scruffy and gives of a not caring vibe then it should be fine.

Its important for me to follow the chose the right costumes for the characters as my audience research showed that some people watching my music video are watching it for a sense of identity according to the uses and gratification theory and as Gauntlet may suggest. I will be using lots of close ups of the lead singer so he will be seen as a role model according to Goodwin's star theory and therefore he will definitely be wearing conventional indie clothing so that the audience can identify with him and form an identity from him that suits their indie lifestyle.

Props:

  • jigsaw pieces - to create a metaphor
  • Big candle - help build enigma according to Barthes as it will not help further the plot just create confusion. Enigma is a important convention of indie genre
  • Cigarettes - cigarettes are not good for you and therefore using them could be seen as reckless or not caring which is a convention of the indie genre. cigarettes could be considered a small convention of indie genre as they are seen a lot in indie music videos such as "mr brightside" by the killers
  • ashtray - same as above
Actors & their clothing:
Lead singer: Nick Park
I chose Nick because I know he is a good actor and would do a grand job of being able to lip sync in my music video. Nick also suits the characteristic of an indie lead singer such as scruffy hair and being attractive, following this convention the audience can easily identify this as an indie music video by the generic lead singer, which Nick is perfect for, according to the cultivation theory. This is conventional indie clothing as I found out in my research, and just like in the indie music video for "young chasers" by circa waves.

Guitar: Finlay Bond
I chose Finlay because I know he can play the guitar to a high standard and could easily help me replicate the guitar in the song. Finlays costume is a white t-shirt and white jacket which represent positive things, this creates a strong contrast between him and the rest of the dark music video including the male and female protagonists black clothing. This again enhances the contrast between the narrative and performance. Finlay is not wearing traditional indie clothes such as a denim jacket but I did not want everyone to be wearing the same looking clothing so this slightly challenges the indie convention but still applies to the convention of the "not caring" look. Neale would say this is fine as he says "genre is a repetition of elements with patterns of variation" and Finlay is creating this variation.

Drums: Lewis Godfrey
I chose Lewis again because he is the best person I know who can play the drums and again can easily help me replicate this for my music video. Lewis will not actually be seen in my music video but I will use scenes of him playing the drums where you only see his hands. I will do this to create a link between the narrative and the performance as I need to show the drums as there are drums in the song suggesting that maybe the events are based of the band/lead singers past experiences. The scenes with drums will have jigsaw pieces flying about as the drums are hit, this amplifies the contrast between the calm slow paced narrative and the fast paced performance with lots of quick cuts.

Topless man: Harry Weston
I chose Harry for a short role, no more than 5 seconds because I know he is brave enough to be filmed topless on camera and is also in great physical condition. Harry's role is small but essential within my music video as there is a link between the jigsaw pieces falling on him and the jigsaw pieces in the story but plays no actual part in developing the narrative. I included this to create confusion and help to build enigma which is essential to the indie genre.

Male protagonist: Ashley Atthowe
I chose Ashley  to be my male protagonist as his partner was willing to be in the music video which would make it less awkward filming them together and would have genuine chemistry. I also believe Ashley is a strong actor who can fulfill the role of the hero according to Propp's character types. Matt will be wearing black jeans and a black jacket with just a hoodie and a t-shirt underneath, I want the black clothes to represent the negative state he is in as black is seen as a negative colour which is used to represent evil. Black also fits in with my location which is a dark abandoned building. These clothes will also reflect the "not caring" vibe of indie music which will help the audience identify that this is a indie music video according to the cultivation theory.

Female Protagonist: Kayleigh Harvey
I chose Kayleigh because she is a strong actor and is also attractive meaning my music video might conform to Mulvey's male gaze. I believe she will be able to play a convincing villain according to Propp's character types. And although this character is not a villain she is the cause of the hero's suffering and cause of his journey. The villain should be a contrast from the hero, however as she is not actually a villain I have chose that she wear similar clothes to the hero such as black jeans and a black hoodie, this represents to the audience that they are each others counterparts. Again her clothes help build the casual style of the indie genre, which also allows the audience to form a sense of identity to the band and the genre according to the uses and gratifications model.
