Survey Analysis

My responses from male to female was fairly even with slightly more mores completing my survey than females. Its good to get an equal view of what males and females think as they may have different views. Its also good to have an equal mix as both males and females tend to listen to female music where as other types of music such as metal tend to only me male. However this question was not that effective in helping me design a music video.

Most of the people who filled out my survey tend to be tends to be teens because I am myself and teen and I advertised it on my social and most of my contacts on there are in the same age bracket. However I also handed out surveys to people outside of HMV in chapelfield Norwich which allowed me to ask people of a higher age bracket. Although I found it hard to ask people of higher age bracket as I was more comfortable asking people around my age bracket. Its good to results around this age because stereotypically most people who listen to indie music are likely to be teens or young adults, however its still important to consider other age groups as they too may enjoy indie music. Again this question  did not really help me plan my music video.

I used this question to help decide how valid some ones views were, for example if they chose very little or not at all then they may not be my target market and therefore their opinion is not valid, however most people selected around often which showed they are my target market as they are likely to see my music video and they are also likely to have a better understanding of what makes a good music video so I shall consider their answers. This question was quite effective when it came to choosing which results I took into opinion and which I didn't.

This question would also tell me how valid a subjects answers are because if they listen to music via youtube or on tv then they are likely to see a lot of music videos and are therefore more educated in music videos and can give me a better answers to what makes a good music video. However if they do not use tv or youtube then they might not see as many music videos and maybe can not answer the question as well but there opinion should still be valid as they still listen to music. Also because they use CDs or itunes then they are likely to be more exposed to artwork so they maybe more helpful in looking at what makes good artwork for my digipak. This question was quite effective in deciding which results I took into opinion and which I didn't.

Most people told me they watched music videos as a source of entertainment which is most likely true and therefore I need to make sure my music is gripping and not dull. However one problem with this question is that the subject may not know or want to admit that they use the video as an escape from reality or as a form of identity because it may be embarrassing to admit or they are unaware this is even happening so its a sensitive area. I should of maybe explained by what is meant by some of the options such as what using it as a form of identity means or express to the subject that it is confidential. This is an advantage of using an online survey as people will feel more secure and be more honest behind a screen instead of face to face. However in face to face survey I could build rapport with subjects so they trusted me more so they felt they could tell the truth and if they did not understand an option I was able to explain it to them. The options also showed that more people wanted to see narrative in the video rather than the band themselves perform which maybe shows me the proportion of the video that should be the band performing and which should be a story possibly related to the lyrics. For deeper meaning was also a popular option and having a confusing mysterious storyline is a characteristic of the indie genre. This question was quite effective in helping me plan my music video as I could design it to fit their desires.
This question also played a large part in deciding whether or not a subjects answers are valid. If they enjoy both then they are my target market and their answers are definitely more important then others and I should consider more than others. If they enjoy indie or rock then they are still my target market and their opinions on what should be in a music video should still be considered. However if they do not enjoy either music then they are not really my target market and I should therefore not consider their answers as much, their answers on what makes a good music video maybe valid but no where near as important as the results of the people who do enjoy indie or rock as they are my target market. This question was quite effective in deciding which results I took into opinion and which I didn't.
I thought it would be a good idea to see what my target market thought was a good music video so this question aloud them to sow me what they think a good music video is. I will now go and watch some of these music videos and see why they are so good. However I probably should of asked why they enjoyed it, as it would of made it a lot clearer as to why it is a good video as well as made it easier for me. This question was very effective as I could view music videos that had a good review and get inspiration from them.
This question was more assist my digipak. There was a strong correlation between the age of the subject and whether or not they would buy a physical album, the older the subject the more willing they were to buy a physical album. "No" was the most popular option so I need to find a way of making a physical copy more appealing. Artwork was also a popular choice and with indie music quirky, interesting and weird artwork is a characteristic so I will have to make sure my digipak is particularly aesthetic and interesting to satisfy those who do buy physical albums as well as appeal to those who would not normally consider buying a digipak. This question was not really that effective as it did not allow me to find out from my audience what makes a good digipak.
This question was designed to help me with the mise en scene. If some one really enjoys indie music they might use it as a form of identity and therefore dress in that style. So by asking what they are wearing I can see what people who enjoy indie wear. This will help me to decide what clothes the actors in my music video will be wearing. The typical indie characteristics of clothing is scruffy, slightly dirty and not caring look, such as ripped jeans, t-shirts, denim jackets etc and the results has reflected this. I will have to discredit responses from people who do not enjoy indie music as this is not what I want the characters wearing cloths that are typical of another type of music, such as a track suit would be appropriate for rap but not for indie. This was effective as it allowed me to find out what to use for mise en scene within my music video.
Question 5 allowed me to find out why my target audience watch music videos, popular answers were a source of escapism and entertainment suggesting they were looking to get self-actualization according to Maslows hierarchy of needs. Another popular answer to see the band which shows they watch music videos for their basic needs. And therefore my music video will be part narrative and part performance to meet there needs.

According to cross culture consumer categories the main type of category that my target audience fits into is explorer meaning they are looking for something new. Therefore I follow some conventions of the indie genre as well as reject some of them. As Neale said "genre is a repetition of elements with patterns of variation" therefore I can repeat some of the conventions while rejecting others in order to create variation. However my audience survey also told me that my target audience is partly made up from people who are categorized as strugglers, meaning they are looking for escapism in my music and therefore I shall create an interesting and immersive narrative to my music video.

My survey also shows me that people watch music videos to see the band and the lead singer. They could be doing this in order to create their own personal identities from this according to the uses and gratifications theory. Therefore they are creating their own identity by watching what they want, which also relates to Gauntlett. Again my survey showed me people wanted escapism and that the audience wants a diversion.

Comments

  1. Thorough and detailed analysis of the results, which demonstrate well-planned questioning. Getting a description of subjects' clothing is a nice touch.
HTI - just missing a couple of quite important things: reference to audience models, statistics and any evaluation of the effectiveness of questions.
