Poster Analysis - Circa Waves Tour 2017
The largest text on the poster by far is
the name of the band which is clearly to make it the first thing the consumers
will see. Its also white which stands out against the poster as it fades to
black the title is. The bands font is also different to their previous albums
style, its changed from scruffy to be block capitals with quirky little changes
in the letters like the line in the A. This shows the bands slight shift in
change of music, its still indie hence the simplistic and not caring attitude but
is slightly smarter and darker as it is now more indie rock.
The band picture has been changed as it
looks like there is a red filter so there skin looks red rather than skin
coloured, this is to match their album Different creatures which only uses the
colours red, black and white. This could represent that their music is them and
is important to them showing a real connection between you listening to their
music and them. This can also be a form of identity and to help sell tickets
and album with this colour scheme.
The poster contains the band which can be
used as a form of identity as you can use the band as not just music but to
market and sell the music. People will associate the face or a feature of the
band with the music and therefore use this on all their products to create
identity and people who really like the band will be more likely to buy a
product if they see this feature such as the band or a member. The lead singers
head is larger in comparison to the other members of the band so maybe they are
trying to use him more as the brand identity.
There are also two eyeball flowers on the
side of the poster which again create identity, this eyeball flower entity is
the only picture on the front of the album which consumers will relate together
and when seeing this unusual entity people will instantly associate it with
band as it is very unique and unlike anything else. It is also strange and
quirky which is a classic characteristic of indie music.
The band are a lot wearing the same
scruffy or casual kind of cloths such as t-shirts or hoodies. The band also
aren’t smiling suggesting they weren’t really trying for the picture, another
member is not even looking at the camera which again shows the not bothered
attitude which is a characteristic of the indie genre. Another member looks
quite laid back and possibly even depressed as their album is about problems
they might have such as their existing fan base not liking the change in music.
This conforms to Goodwin's “star power” as they are going to appeal to people
who enjoy the indie genre.
Using the rule of thirds, I am first
attracted to the band name in the middle of the poster, the band members shirts
lead me up to see the band. I’m then attracted to the eyeball on the middle of
the left as that too is white and stands out against the blackness of the
poster. I’m then taken down across the poster to the other white eyeball at the
bottom right of the poster which shows me the tour dates which are not meant to
be the first thing as it is blends into the poster a lot more than the white which
doesn’t and is clearly meant to be seen first.
Good analysis including discussion of the colour pallette and the composition of the whole piece, touching on the brand identity of the artist but dancing around the terminology.
